Will Tunable Optics Benefit My Network?

Introduction Tunable transceivers have rapidly progressed since their ancestors Dye Lasers were developed in the late 1960’s. Tunable transceivers have become prominently used in DWDM transmission systems due to their multi-faceted abilities and ease of spare use. Their ability to function on various wavelengths has set these optics apart from fixed-wavelength transceivers and also have made them more popular among DWDM systems. When partnered with ROADM (re-configurable optical add-drop multiplexers), tunable transceivers become a powerful and invaluable high-speed transmission tool.

Benefits of Tunable Transceivers

Tunable Transceivers
  1. Tunable transceivers have a wide tuning range. Tunable transceivers are able to take the place of multiple fixed-channel transceivers, saving time and money in the long-run.
  2. Tunable DFB (Distributive Feedback) laser arrays are adjustable and work well with 100G systems by reducing line-width. DFB laser arrays are more stable than DBR laser arrays. Their wavelengths can be adjusted to fit your transmitting needs.
  3.  Tunable lasers have the capability to switch between wavelengths in just nanoseconds. Tunable lasers are high-speed, high-performing optics. These optics are able to be reprogrammed in seconds to the appropriate wavelength
