Systems Engineer

OVERVIEW: 

Precision Optical Transceivers is a dynamic, fast growing startup in Rochester, NY seeking an aspiring sales professional to join our sales support team. We are a manufacturer of optical transceivers and other optical networking components, as well as a provider of custom designed networking solutions. 

The Systems Engineer has a strong understanding of optical networking technologies and how these technologies apply to Precision OT’s customers. The Systems Engineer also defines specifications and test procedures, and leads troubleshooting and integration efforts for passive and active optical network equipment. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 

• Defines technical specifications and test procedures for Precision OT’s product line 
• Interacts with sales teams to create solutions to customer’s optical networking needs 
• Technically supports vendor and equipment qualification and evaluation 
• Leads optical network equipment troubleshooting, integration, and root cause analysis efforts 
• Creates and updates configuration templates to be programmed into optical network devices 
• Tests and validates compatibility of optical network devices with various types/models of networking equipment 
• The Systems Engineer position will require some travel, up to 30% a year 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: 

• A bachelor’s degree in computer, electrical, or telecommunications engineering or relevant experience 
• Experience as an optical network engineer a plus 
• Experience with passive and active optical equipment a plus 

COMPETENCIES: 

• Understanding of optical network technologies such as xWDM, filters, amplifiers, fiber types, dispersion, lasers, photodetectors, etc. 
• Understanding of optical networking protocols such as Ethernet, OTN, Fibre Channel, CPRI, PON, etc. 
• Proficiency with optical test gear such as OTDR, BER Test Sets, VOAs, Power Meters, etc. 
• Experience with optical link loss budget analysis 
• Proficient in using command line interfaces 
• Proven problem solving skills with experience and background in solving complex problems and issues. 
• Effective oral and written communication skills 
• Excellent interpersonal skills 
• Exceptional time management skills, strong attention to detail and self-motivation
