Le groupe, dirig\u00e9 par le Dr Milton Feng, a pr\u00e9sent\u00e9 un syst\u00e8me de communication optique bas\u00e9 sur la technologie VCSEL (Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser) qui a atteint 57 Gbps. Cela repr\u00e9sente une am\u00e9lioration significative par rapport au pr\u00e9c\u00e9dent record de 40 Gbps. Le d\u00e9bit enregistr\u00e9 de 57 Gbps avec l&#039;\u00e9quipe du Dr Feng n&#039;est pas la vitesse de transmission optique la plus rapide jamais enregistr\u00e9e ; la distinction revient \u00e0 une \u00e9quipe de l&#039;University College London. L&#039;\u00e9quipe a d\u00e9montr\u00e9 un syst\u00e8me avec un d\u00e9bit d&#039;environ 1,125 t\u00e9rabits par seconde. Le taux enregistr\u00e9 par l&#039;\u00e9quipe de l&#039;University College London a \u00e9t\u00e9 atteint avec un prototype de laboratoire hautement optimis\u00e9 dans lequel plusieurs \u00e9metteurs et un seul r\u00e9cepteur \u00e9taient directement connect\u00e9s les uns aux autres.&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/mntl.illinois.edu\/news\/article\/15442\" target=\"_blank\">Le nouveau syst\u00e8me<\/a>&nbsp;fonctionne via un c\u00e2ble \u00e0 fibre optique et utilise une technologie qui a d\u00e9j\u00e0 fait ses preuves pour fonctionner avec succ\u00e8s \u00e0 distance. Bien que les composants VCSEL soient utilis\u00e9s commercialement depuis plus de 15 ans, le Dr Feng et son \u00e9quipe ont r\u00e9ussi \u00e0 faire progresser le VCSEL au-del\u00e0 des limites pr\u00e9c\u00e9dentes. Plusieurs aspects du syst\u00e8me bas\u00e9 sur VCSEL en font une r\u00e9alisation r\u00e9volutionnaire. Non seulement les donn\u00e9es ont \u00e9t\u00e9 transmises et re\u00e7ues sur la fibre \u00e0 des vitesses sans pr\u00e9c\u00e9dent, mais cela s&#039;est fait totalement sans erreur de transmission et \u00e0 temp\u00e9rature ambiante. M\u00eame \u00e0 des temp\u00e9ratures aussi \u00e9lev\u00e9es que 185 degr\u00e9s Fahrenheit (85 degr\u00e9s C), les chercheurs ont pu maintenir un d\u00e9bit de donn\u00e9es de 50 Gbps. Le Dr Feng note qu&#039;il est extr\u00eamement difficile d&#039;atteindre des d\u00e9bits de donn\u00e9es \u00e9lev\u00e9s \u00e0 des temp\u00e9ratures \u00e9lev\u00e9es. \u00ab C&#039;est pourquoi les centres de donn\u00e9es sont r\u00e9frig\u00e9r\u00e9s et disposent de syst\u00e8mes de refroidissement \u00bb, explique-t-il. \u00ab Pour les centres de donn\u00e9es et pour un usage commercial, vous aimeriez qu&#039;un appareil ne transporte pas de r\u00e9frig\u00e9rateur. L&#039;appareil doit \u00eatre op\u00e9rationnel de la temp\u00e9rature ambiante jusqu&#039;\u00e0 85 degr\u00e9s sans d\u00e9penser d&#039;\u00e9nergie et de ressources pour le refroidissement. Le Dr Feng s&#039;attend \u00e0 ce que l&#039;avantage de la vitesse de la nouvelle technologie conduise \u00e0 son utilisation g\u00e9n\u00e9ralis\u00e9e dans les centres de donn\u00e9es. Il pr\u00e9voit \u00e9galement qu&#039;il sera largement utilis\u00e9 dans les syst\u00e8mes de communication des avions, car, comme il le dit, &quot;les fils de fibre optique sont beaucoup plus l\u00e9gers que le fil de cuivre&quot;.
