Here are her main takeaways from the highly anticipated event.<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Introduction<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=-_uHO3dCUfM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">OFC Plenary session<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> on Tuesday morning, 3 distinguished speakers delivered a message about global digitalization and what it means in terms of people, technology, and our environment.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559739&quot;:160}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Patricia Obo-Nai, CEO of Vodafone Ghana, emphasized the need for digitalization to be accessible to all.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0 <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Highlighting some key barriers to digital connectivity in Africa, Patricia pointed to poor network coverage, low device penetration, low digital literacy, and a lack of relevant digital content.\u00a0\u00a0 She emphasized that success can only be achieved through partnership.\u00a0 Urging the OFC community to consider network accessibility for everyone when discussing challenges in optical fiber communications, she said, <em>\u201cNo one agency or company can address this problem. We must all work together to ensure that we leave no one behind.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559739&quot;:160}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Arista CEO Jayshree Ullal spoke of <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">pushing the limits of electrical and soon, optical technology, with artificial intelligence (AI).<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> The petascale era of cloud networking puts increasing demands on the systems and optics required to run new AI\/ML-driven network architectures.\u202f <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Starting with processors having Terabits of GPU,\u00a0 and very, VERY high end servers that continue to get faster and faster and denser and denser,\u00a0 AI is already powering nearly everything we do online.\u00a0 <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">1.6TB and higher networking requires a new class of optical transceivers,\u00a0 advanced silicon technology, new optical materials and advanced Linear Drive (LD) interfaces.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559739&quot;:160}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Corning CEO Wendell Weeks expressed his faith in OFC\u2019s collaborative capabilities.\u00a0 <em>\u201cCreate an obstacle for THIS crowd, and we will find a way.\u201d\u00a0<\/em> Framed in Mr. Weeks\u2019 office is a purchase order of<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">the first sale of glass for manufacturing light bulbs, signed by Thomas Edison himself. Edison had come to Corning and asked<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"><em> \u201cHow do I make [lightbulbs] economical?\u201d<\/em>\u202f <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Now, as a network of optical fiber has become vital to our daily lives and advancement, Weeks called to mind the multitude of obstacles in the optical fiber communications industry that we\u2019ve already overcome and those we\u2019ll overcome in the future.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0 <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">We need to use less energy\/bit while at the same time increasing capacity and speed.\u00a0 We have to make the right decisions (environmentally) as we move forward, ideally expending less than a pico joule of energy per bit.\u00a0 Soon <em>\u201cthe obstacles will become THE WAY\u201d<\/em>,\u00a0 Weeks said. <em>\u201cWe are expanding the bandwidth of human potential.\u201d<\/em><\/span><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">OIF 400ZR Interoperability Demo<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233279&quot;:true,&quot;335559739&quot;:160}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Throughout the conference, interoperability<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">was mentioned as a key for mass adoption of new technology.\u00a0\u00a0 Precision OT was excited and proud to participate in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.oiforum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/OIF_PLL_Demo_OFC23_400ZR_slides.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">400ZR Interoperability Demo<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> organized by the Optical Internetworking Forum (OIF). <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As an OIF standard, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">400ZR<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> coherent optics provide 400Gbps of bandwidth over a single optical wavelength using DWDM. This technology enables point to point 400GbE data center interconnect (DCI) for distances up to 80-120km with the use of amplifiers but without the need for specialized optical transport equipment. The 400ZR standard was born out of a hyperscale need for enhanced DCI performance using small form factor pluggable modules like QSFP-DD and OSFP.\u00a0 <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">OIF celebrated their 25<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">th<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> anniversary with a reception at their very popular booth hosting the 400ZR Interoperability Demo.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559739&quot;:160}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Coherent Optics in the Access Network<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233279&quot;:true,&quot;335559739&quot;:160}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233279&quot;:true,&quot;335559739&quot;:160}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">While 400G ZR was widely discussed and applauded at OFC\u201923, it\u2019s recognized that not everyone is ready to jump onboard.\u00a0 What\u2019s preventing some folks from rushing to 400G ZR?\u00a0 In addition to its high power requirement, it requires the purchase of routers and switches with 400G ports, (ie. new capital expenditures &amp; upgrades).\u00a0\u00a0 As a result of their findings in a study of <em><strong>Coherent at the Network Edge<\/strong><\/em>,\u00a0 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cignal.ai\/2023\/02\/100zr-coherent-pluggable-deployment-begins-in-2024\/#:~:text=Cignal%20AI%E2%80%99s%20forecast%20for%20100ZR%20module%20shipments%20was%20doubled%20for%202025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Cignal AI\u2019s forecast for 100ZR module shipments was doubled for 2025<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">.\u00a0 <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This is mostly driven by the fact that select transceiver companies have come out with a QSFP28 version of 100G coherent.\u00a0 The original forecast was based on QSFP-DD which is a relatively high power device so it doesn\u2019t fit a lot of applications the way a coherent QSFP28 would.\u00a0 Not every location needs 400G coherent and not all hosts will support QSFP-DD 400G pluggable optics. With the QSFP28 ZR, 100G coherent signals are possible utilizing existing equipment\/ports and in some cases, avoiding equipment expenditures while conserving power.\u00a0 400ZR works very well for DCI applications and\/or small volume.\u00a0 But to go out into the Access space where power is critical, having a way to do this in a QSFP28 form factor is a real paradigm shift.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233279&quot;:true,&quot;335559739&quot;:160}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Passive Optical Network (PON): Coming To a Room Near You!<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233279&quot;:true,&quot;335559739&quot;:160}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">PON continues to expand its reach further into the Access space with one of the most recent applications, Fiber to the Room (FTTR).\u00a0 High data traffic and increasing numbers of smart devices within the home put a strain on traditional Wi-Fi technology.\u00a0 No longer is it enough to have fiber to the \u201clast mile\u201d.\u00a0 Many homes now need it to the \u201clast meter\u201d.\u00a0 A subset of ITU <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.itu.int\/en\/ITU-T\/about\/groups\/2022-2024\/Pages\/sg15.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Study Group 15 (SG15),<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.itu.int\/hub\/2020\/09\/itu-standards-project-g-fin-to-provide-fibre-connectivity-in-the-home\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">G.fin project in ITU-T SG15 Q18<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> specifies <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.itu.int\/pub\/T-TUT-HOME-2021-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">FTTR use cases<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, architecture, PMD and protocols.\u00a0 As described in an OFC\u00a0 short course by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.comsoc.org\/yuanqiu-luo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Dr. Yuanqiu Luo<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, the path from each G.fin user consists of two parts: home PON and access PON, where the home PON includes Optical Network Units (ONUs) in multiple rooms within the house.\u00a0 Room ONUs,\u00a0 also called G.fin end-points, provide the advantages of fiber connectivity to each user.\u00a0 A G.fin head-end within the home is the gateway to connect room ONUs to the Optical Line Terminal (OLT).<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233279&quot;:true,&quot;335559739&quot;:160}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Photonic Integrated Circuits (PICs)<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233279&quot;:true,&quot;335559739&quot;:160}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">PICs were another hot topic at OFC \u201923.\u00a0 Containing 100s of optical components on a single chip, photonic integrated circuits (PICs) offer more functionality, reliability, and scalability than their discrete optical component predecessors.\u00a0 The most sophisticated PICs to date <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/aip.scitation.org\/doi\/10.1063\/1.5087862#:~:text=The%20most%20sophisticated%20circuits%20including%20lasers%2C%20modulators%2C%20detectors%2C%20and%20multiplexers%20have%20more%20than%201000%20components%20in%20one%20chip.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">contain over 1000 optical components on single chip<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0 <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">PICs can and have been created by leveraging the same manufacturing processes as the far more mature electrical integrated circuit (EIC) industry.\u00a0 <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">While Datacom\/Telecom applications are the highest volume application for the narrow linewidth silicon substrates used in PICs,\u00a0 several other high volume applications help drive economy of scale including LIDAR, Optical Gyroscopes, AR\/VR, Optical and Quantum Computing and Biosensors.
