La serie de est\u00e1ndares G-989 define las caracter\u00edsticas de las implementaciones de NG-PON2 (Next-Generation Passive Optical Network Stage 2) que permitir\u00e1n velocidades de datos de &quot;fibra hasta el hogar&quot; o &quot;fibra hasta las instalaciones&quot;. alcanza hasta 40 Gbps. Esto va mucho m\u00e1s all\u00e1 de las capacidades de la tecnolog\u00eda PON actual. El ITU-T considera que NG-PON2 es el sucesor de GPON (Gigabyte-capable PON), que puede alcanzar tasas de 2.488 Gbps de bajada y 1.244 Gbps de subida, y 10G-PON (tambi\u00e9n llamado XG-PON1), que es capaz de 10 Gbps de bajada y 2,5 o 5 Gbps de subida. NG-PON2 se basa en una arquitectura punto a multipunto de m\u00faltiples longitudes de onda. Emplea multiplexaci\u00f3n por divisi\u00f3n de tiempo y longitud de onda (TWDM) junto con transceptores \u00f3pticos sintonizables para proporcionar una velocidad m\u00e1xima de acceso descendente de 10 Gbps para cada longitud de onda. Normalmente, se emplean de cuatro a ocho longitudes de onda en ambas direcciones. Un solo terminal de l\u00ednea \u00f3ptica (OLT) en la oficina central de un proveedor, que funciona a trav\u00e9s de un divisor \u00f3ptico, puede alimentar hasta 256 unidades de red \u00f3ptica (ONU) en las instalaciones del cliente. Una gran ventaja del nuevo est\u00e1ndar es que NG-PON2 puede reutilizar redes de distribuci\u00f3n \u00f3ptica existentes dise\u00f1adas originalmente para GPON o XG-PON1.
