Die G-989-Standardreihe definiert die Eigenschaften von NG-PON2-Implementierungen (Next-Generation Passive Optical Network Stage 2), die \u201eFiber-to-the-Home\u201c- oder \u201eFiber-to-the-Premises\u201c-Datenraten erm\u00f6glichen erreichen bis zu 40 Gbit\/s. Die ITU-T betrachtet NG-PON2 als Nachfolger von GPON (Gigabyte-f\u00e4higes PON), das Raten von 2,488 Gbit\/s im Downstream und 1,244 Gbit\/s im Upstream erreichen kann, und 10G-PON (auch XG-PON1 genannt), das dazu in der Lage ist 10 Gbit\/s Downstream und 2,5 oder 5 Gbit\/s Upstream. NG-PON2 basiert auf einer Punkt-zu-Mehrpunkt-Architektur mit mehreren Wellenl\u00e4ngen. Ein einzelnes Optical Line Terminal (OLT) in der Zentrale eines Anbieters kann \u00fcber einen optischen Splitter bis zu 256 Optical Network Units (ONUs) am Standort des Kunden versorgen. Ein gro\u00dfer Vorteil des neuen Standards besteht darin, dass NG-PON2 bestehende optische Verteilungsnetze, die urspr\u00fcnglich f\u00fcr GPON oder XG-PON1 entwickelt wurden, wiederverwenden kann. Dar\u00fcber hinaus erm\u00f6glicht der NG-PON2-Wellenl\u00e4ngenplan die Koexistenz mit diesen fr\u00fcheren Technologien auf demselben System. Gro\u00dfe Dienstleister, darunter Verizon, Energia und Vodafone, haben bereits Feldversuche mit NG-PON2 durchgef\u00fchrt.
